LinkedInFor a long time it was common to set everything up from scratch for every IT project. Unfortunately, that was always pretty annoying, and the existing solutions on the market either don't cover everything properly or don't let you host it yourself. So we built our own solution.
In 2017, our first app, KVB Live Timetable, was released. Then as now, it has just one purpose: showing live departure times for trams and buses in Cologne – and it did really well right from the start.
As the KVB Live Timetable app kept doing better and better, it quickly became clear that it would make sense to offer it for other cities as well. At first, the original app was simply copied and the values adjusted accordingly.
Since some of the other apps were doing very well too, the idea of offering them as a kind of whitelabel product came up fairly quickly. But as there was no reasonable solution for that back then, we built our own pipelines, set up repos and tried to streamline as much as possible.
Thanks to tools like Ansible, Terraform and various GitOps repositories, the setup kept getting more professional and better, and it also lent itself to delivering the first client projects.
The platform's infrastructure kept growing alongside our day-to-day business. Not only were apps built, but screenshots were automated, servers were set up automatically, and much more. Still, this “setup” was for internal use only.
Ever since tools like Cursor, Claude Code, Codex and co. came along, it has been clear that the future is going to change. So this infrastructure changed as well. There were dedicated Markdown files for AI agents, unified development standards and much more. The number of apps we created grew too.
When we used the infrastructure to help a team at a Startplatz hackathon set up their project in minutes instead of hours, it was finally clear that the idea for our own startup had been right in front of us the whole time. Slowly but surely, the name “Application Platform” emerged and the whole thing became more professional. Now we're finally here with a great solution and are happy to share this experience with you.
